2) New Information & Recent Changes in History (Updated July 28th 2009)

There is a revision to the history syllabus for the assessment of paper one at both higher level (HL) and standard level (SL). Paper one will now be a common paper for both HL and SL. Therefore,candidates at both HL and SL will answer the same questions. This revision applies to Route 1(History of Europe and the Islamic World) and Route 2 (20th Century world history).

Route 1 (History of Europe and the Islamic World) paper one will be a common paper for HL/SL
with both prescribed subjects (PS 1: The origins and rise of Islam c500-661 and PS 2: The kingdom of Sicily 1130-1302) on the same examination paper. Therefore, candidates will receive one paper covering both prescribed subjects and they will answer the questions on their chosen prescribed subject.

NB: The SL specimen paper one on the online curriculum centre OCC will be used as the template
for future examinations. Therefore, please disregard the HL paper one specimen.

Route 2 (20th Century world history) will be a common paper for HL/SL but will be split according to the 3 prescribed subjects
PS1: Peacemaking, peacekeeping – international relations 1918-1936;
PS2: The Arab-Israeli conflict 1945-1979
PS3: Communism in crisis 1976-1989

Therefore, coordinators must register candidates for their selected prescribed subject. Candidates will receive

only the examination paper for their prescribed subject selected at registration. Therefore it is essential to register accurately.

For example, if candidates are studying the History of Africa regional option you will now need to
select this in the usual way but you will also enter your choice of prescribed subject as follows:

History of Africa: Peacemaking/peacekeeping OR
History of Africa: Arab-Israeli conflict OR
History of Africa: Communism in crisis
